Why WA vintners oppose wine bottle deposit plan
WA’s wine industry wants the State Government to hit pause on plans to include wine bottles in its popular container deposit scheme, with producers saying they face an $11 million financial hit.
From July 1, the State’s Containers for Change scheme — which allows people to return plastic bottles, cartons or aluminium cans to collection points in exchange for 10¢ per item — will be expanded to wine and spirit bottles.
Local wine producers say the move will cost them 14¢ a bottle and put them at a serious disadvantage to those in other States where the scheme is not scheduled to be introduced until 2027.
