Why Australian parliament could get bigger

A parliamentary committee is leaning toward recommending Australia expands its national legislature for the first time in more than four decades.

Submissions to the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters (JSCEM) have mostly backed a bigger parliament, with many arguing Australia’s growing population would be better served by smaller electorates.

Special Minister of State Don Farrell, who is charged with handling electoral and parliamentary matters, said on Wednesday that “strengthening our institutions” was crucial as democracies decline across the globe.
